Questions for the OU on their statement against a proposed rally against Olmert’s plan to Expel Jews from their homes

(This incredible public statement can be seen on the OU’s website:

Below questions, in bold, are interspersed with the statement.)

We question who the OU represents when they make such decisions and if an organization with such policies is deserving of our Tzedakah funds.

OU Statement on a Proposed Rally in Washington Regarding the Visit of Prime Minister Olmert

May 18, 2006

Today, Stephen Savitsky, president, and Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, executive vice president, issued the following statement on behalf of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America in reaction to reports of a rally being organized next week in Washington, DC to protest Israeli Prime Minister Olmert’s nascent “convergence” policy:

Was there a vote taken of the member Orthodox Jewish Congregations?!
Who exactly makes policy in the OU?

We at the “Orthodox Union” believe that it is inappropriate at this time,

At what time does the OU believe it is appropriate- AFTER Jews are already expelled?!

to hold a rally in Washington, DC to express differences with the democratically elected Prime Minister of Israel.

Does the OU really believe that israel is a democracy?! The ruling elite have “criminalized” their credible opposition.  Israel is NOT a democracy. Isn’t the OU aware that free speech is not allowed in Israel? Isn’t the OU aware that political parties that advocate the expulsion of  Arab terrorists instead of the expulsion of our Jewish brethren are banned??!!

Prime Minister Olmert is making his first official visit to the United States where he will meet with the President of the Jewish state’s strongest ally and has been accorded the rare honor of addressing a joint meeting of Congress; details of Mr. Olmert’s “convergence” proposal remain unclear;

Which part of Mr. Olmert’s “convergence plan” was unclear? In February and March before the last elections Olmert already announced that Jewish land will be given to the Arabs and that Jews will be thrown out of their homes. Which part of that was ‘unclear?’

(over…)

and this visit is a critical opportunity to obtain for Israel the support she needs from the United States

Does the OU really believe that our tax dollars should go to pay for the expulsion of Jewish people from their homes?!

in an otherwise unsympathetic world.

How are we to understand this? Since the world is unsympathetic to the removal of Jews from their homes we should ask ‘sympathetic’ America to help expel Jews from their homes?!

In this context, the Orthodox Union believes the appropriate “address” to express concerns or differences with the elected Prime Minister is in Jerusalem, not Washington, DC.

Does the OU really believe that Olmert will pay attention in Jerusalem to those who oppose his policies once he gets enough funding to commit the expulsion?!
